Holiday Allowance Calculator (Vakantiegeld) 2026

Calculate your net Dutch holiday allowance (vakantiegeld) for 2026. Enter your gross monthly salary and the number of months worked in the reference period to see the gross vakantiegeld, the bijzonder tarief (special rate) tax withheld, and your net payout.

What is vakantiegeld?

Vakantiegeld (holiday allowance) is a mandatory annual payment under Dutch labor law, calculated as a minimum of 8% of the employee's gross annual salary. Most employers pay it in May or June, covering the period from June of the previous year to May of the current year. Some employers spread the payment across the year, which is also allowed.

The 8% minimum is based on the employee's gross salary earned during the reference period. This includes base salary, fixed allowances, and overtime pay in most cases, but excludes expense reimbursements. Many collective labor agreements (CAO) set a higher vakantiegeld percentage.

How vakantiegeld is taxed

In the Netherlands (Nederland), holiday allowance is taxed at the bijzonder tarief (special rate) rather than the regular loonheffing table. The bijzonder tarief is based on the employee's annualized income and is typically higher than the regular monthly rate for lower-income employees, and similar for higher earners. The result is that the effective tax burden on a lump-sum vakantiegeld payment roughly equals the annual tax rate on regular income.

How to use this calculator

Enter each employment period separately: the gross monthly salary and the number of full and partial months worked. If you worked a full 12-month period at the same salary, enter it as one period. If you had a salary change, split it into two periods — before and after the change. The calculator aggregates the periods and applies the 2026 bijzonder tarief table.

Frequently asked questions

Is vakantiegeld mandatory in the Netherlands?

Yes, under Dutch law (Wet minimumloon en minimumvakantiebijslag). Every employee is entitled to at least 8% of their gross earned salary as holiday allowance, regardless of whether their contract specifies it. Self-employed contractors (ZZP) are not entitled to it from clients.

When is vakantiegeld paid?

The typical payment date is end of May or early June, so employees receive it before the main summer holiday period. Some employers pay monthly (it then shows as a separate line on the payslip) or at a different time of year if specified in a CAO or individual contract.

What is the bijzonder tarief?

The bijzonder tarief is a special withholding rate applied to non-regular income payments such as holiday allowance, bonuses, thirteenth month, and overtime top-ups. It is derived from the employee's total taxable income, annualized, so the tax paid on a lump sum roughly equals what would be owed if received spread over the year.

What percentage is Dutch holiday allowance?

The statutory minimum is 8% of gross earned salary. Many collective labor agreements (CAO) set a higher percentage, commonly 8.33% (equal to one monthly salary across 12 months). Check your CAO or employment contract for your specific rate.
