Dutch Car Tax Calculator (MRB) 2026

Calculate your Dutch motorrijtuigenbelasting (MRB) for 2026 by entering your license plate, vehicle weight, fuel type, and province. The calculator uses the official 2026 MRB tariff tables from the Belastingdienst to show your quarterly and annual road tax.

How MRB is calculated

Dutch road tax (motorrijtuigenbelasting), the annual vehicle tax in the Netherlands (Nederland), is based on the vehicle's empty weight (kerbweight in kilograms), fuel type, and the province where you live. The base rate is set nationally, but all 12 Dutch provinces apply an additional provincial surcharge (opcenten) on top of the base amount. This means the same car can cost meaningfully more in one province than another.

For 2026, electric vehicles (EVs) receive a 70% discount on the base MRB rate. This reduction is scheduled to step down in coming years, so EVs purchased now still benefit from a significant discount compared to petrol or diesel equivalents of similar weight.

Diesel cars carry a surcharge over petrol vehicles due to higher nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions. LPG vehicles have their own separate tariff category.

License plate lookup

Enter a Dutch license plate number to fetch the vehicle details automatically from the RDW (national vehicle registration authority). The lookup fills in the weight and fuel type so you do not need to find your registration document. You can also enter these details manually if you prefer.

Province comparison

The calculator shows a comparison table across all 12 Dutch provinces so you can see the cheapest option. If you are near a provincial border, checking the neighboring province can sometimes reveal a meaningful saving on annual road tax.

Frequently asked questions

What is MRB (motorrijtuigenbelasting)?

MRB is the Dutch annual road tax, charged quarterly in advance by the Belastingdienst. It applies to passenger cars, motorcycles, vans, and other motor vehicles registered in the Netherlands. The amount depends on the vehicle's weight, fuel type, and your province of residence.

How much is the EV discount for car tax in 2026?

Electric vehicles get a 70% discount on the base MRB rate in 2026. The discount was 100% until 2024, 75% in 2025, and is 70% in 2026. It is scheduled to fall further in 2027 and 2028 before being removed entirely.

Which Dutch province has the lowest car tax?

Groningen, Drenthe, and Friesland typically have the lowest provincial surcharges (opcenten). Noord-Holland tends to have one of the highest. Use the province comparison feature to check your exact vehicle across all 12 provinces.

Is LPG cheaper than petrol for Dutch road tax?

LPG vehicles usually pay less than petrol cars of the same weight. LPG3 (propane) pays a higher base rate than standard LPG but less than petrol. The exact amounts depend on vehicle weight.
